I am a 44-year-old single mom of three kids under 12. I have a severe calcium deficiency. My dentist recommends extracting all my teeth for upper and lower dentures. I’m devastated and want to know how I can delay facial collapse. I cannot afford to replace my teeth with dental implants. I need to take care of my kids, but I don’t want my face to cave in and look like their grandma. Are there any dental treatments that can slow the progression of facial collapse? Thanks, Camellia – OK
Camellia,
You didn’t mention why your dentist recommends removing all your teeth and replacing them with dentures. Although saving teeth can be more challenging than removing them, we recommend getting a second opinion from a dentist whose treatment philosophy is to save teeth whenever possible.
Did your dentist or a doctor tell you that your severe calcium deficiency affects your teeth? Calcium deficiency is related to nerve problems, osteoporosis, or cramps but doesn’t affect an adult’s permanent teeth. Instead, frequent snacking has a significant effect on tooth decay.
How Can You Facial Collapse After Teeth Extractions?
An implant denture helps preserve jawbone and prevent facial collapse
If a dentist must extract all your teeth, you can slow the progression of facial collapse with dental implants. Facial collapse results from jawbone shrinkage when your teeth are missing. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that stimulate the jawbone and prevent shrinkage.
Although two dental implants can support a denture, four or more will cover and stimulate a wider area of your jawbone. Consult an implant dentist or an oral surgeon to discuss your options. An implant dentist may prefer to place implants and bone graft material, if needed, immediately after tooth removal to prevent bone resorption.
However, we recommend getting a second opinion to determine whether your teeth can be saved. Preserving your teeth is the best option for your long-term oral health.
