What Is a Cosmetic Dentist?
Cosmetic dentistry is not an officially recognized specialty, and most cosmetic dentists, such as Dr. Gavrilos, are licensed as general dentists. But there is definitely a different standard of care delivered by a dentist who has a passion for cosmetic dentistry. Dental schools train dentists to fix functional problems. A cosmetic dentist will solve the functional problem, but will take that a step further. The degree of training required for accreditation from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is quite substantial. Attaining this certification is a reflection of the passion Dr. Gavrilos has for quality care.
Dr. Gavrilos wants his work to be beautiful. If you ask him to create a beautiful smile for you, it is not enough to achieve an “acceptable” appearance. He wants the perfect smile for you; shading and size and shape that blends with your unique facial characteristics, hair color, and complexion. He is also aware that your smile is a reflection of your personality.
Technology
Technology is a vital necessity for the modern cosmetic dentistry office. Dr. Gavrilos continues to educate himself and our staff in the latest techniques and use of new dental materials. Some of the technologies in our office are related to the esthetic value of our work; others help us improve the dental experience. These include:
- ShadeVision – ShadeVision scans the color of teeth. The data recorded by this instrument facilitates the perfect color match between a crown and surrounding teeth.
- Digital X-rays – A small sensor allows Dr. Gavrilos to take x-rays that are instantly displayed on a computer screen where he can use software to help him analyze the images.
- e.max Crowns – These metal-free restorations are based on a white zirconia framework that is referred to as “ceramic steel.” All-ceramic crowns are durable and lifelike. They will not experience the discoloration that is common with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
- Diagnodent – This laser cavity-detecting device is fast and efficient. Moving it across the teeth, it detects small areas of decay before damage is evident on x-ray images. This means more conservative restorative care.
