Barrington Porcelain Inlays and Onlays
The bad news is that you have a cavity. The good news is that no one will know. Dr. Gavrilos offers porcelain inlays and onlays instead of amalgam fillings, restoring both durability and natural beauty.
Inlays and onlays are appropriate for minor to moderate damage. An inlay is used when the area of damage lies within the four corners of the tooth, called cusps. An onlay will extend to cover one or more cusps of the tooth, but won’t extend down to the gum line. A crown will cover the entire tooth, down to the gum line.
Benefits of Porcelain Restorations
Porcelain inlays and onlays are stronger than other types of fillings and last much longer. Patients appreciate the conservative nature of the treatment, as well as the aesthetic value of porcelain, which mimics natural enamel.
To restore a tooth with an inlay or onlay, we schedule two visits. During the first appointment, Dr. Gavrilos will prepare the tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary restoration. The impression and specifications for the inlay or onlay will be sent to our dental lab to be fabricated. During the second visit, the final restoration is will be bonded to the tooth.
Inlays and onlays require a skilled hand and knowledge of advanced bonding techniques. Dr. Gavrilos has been performing this treatment for over 25 years. When treatment is complete, your restored tooth should look and feel just like a natural tooth. This is one of the benefits of choosing an accredited cosmetic dentist for restorative care.
The clear advantage of porcelain inlays and onlays is that these restorations look very natural. However, their value also includes the longevity of the restoration. Because the porcelain is bonded to the tooth, the inlay or onlay will not come loose. The margins are also sealed, preventing the microleakage that occurs with amalgam fillings. Also, they will not corrode or stain.
