I am considering replacing a missing front tooth with dental implants. When I was younger I never had a permanent tooth come in where it should have.
I researched two experienced implant dentists in my area. I went in and had consultations with each of them, but was surprised when they had different approaches. They both agreed that a dental implant would work well for my situation. However, one of them wants to refer me to a specialist for the surgery. Then, he wants me to come back for the restoration. The other dentist said he can do both the surgery and the restoration.
Which dentist is better?

Mark,
It’s great that you have done your research and also that you had two consultations. It is common for an implant dentist to do both the surgical and restoration phase. However, one approach isn’t better than the other. The most important factor is finding experienced doctors with appropriate training in the field.
The implant dentist that is referring you to another doctor for the surgery may not have the same level of continued education as the other one. But, that is exactly why he is recommending you see a more experienced surgeon that he uses. Try not to think of this approach as a reflection of his skill level or outcome of the treatment.
Most excellent implant dentists will be able to provide you with a list of references and before an after photos from cases they have done. Ultimately, the final decision should come to your comfort level and trust. So, continue learning more about each dentist before you make your final decision. They both sound reputable.
You are doing all the right things.
