After weeks of talking to my dentist and planning my smile makeover, my temporary veneers are awful. They are not the color we agreed on, and they affect my speech. I told my dentist about the problem immediately, and she asked me to give the veneers a chance. I am ready to return to my dentist and get the temporaries removed. The problem is that I feel like a homeless dental patient. I do not know where to go to get this corrected. My dentist is too complacent to trust her with new temporary veneers. Might another dentist be willing to take over what my dentist has messed up? – Thank you. Hannah P. from Milwaukee
Hannah,
Thank you for contacting Dr. Gavrilos’s office. We understand why your experience with porcelain veneers is disappointing.
Can You Switch Dentists While You Have Temporary Veneers?
When your treatment plan is problematic, you can switch dentists while wearing temporary veneers. We recommend switching now to avoid further disappointment.
How can you find a new dentist?
- Look for a dentist with advanced cosmetic dentistry training
- Look for patient reviews
- View the cosmetic dentists’ websites and smile gallery of porcelain veneer photos
- Try to find an accredited cosmetic dentist.
Schedule a consultation with at least two cosmetic dentists. At some point, you can expect the dentist to ask for your dental records, complete an oral examination, and take x-rays.
Accreditation vs. Membership in Cosmetic Dentistry
Membership in a cosmetic dentistry organization does not mean that a dentist has extensive training and experience. For example, any dentist can join the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. In contrast, to become accredited, a dentist must pass oral and written exams and submit a series of patient cases to demonstrate their proficiency in creating beautiful smiles with various treatments, including porcelain veneers.
If you become a patient of an accredited cosmetic dentist, it decreases the risk of another unpleasant experience and dramatically increases your chances of getting a beautiful smile with veneers.
