Is There an Alternative to Glazing?
A dental laboratory can polish the zirconia instead of applying a glaze. This process takes more time for the technician, which is why glazing is often the routine choice. Even so, polishing may be an appropriate option for some patients who want to avoid additional surface materials.
What Information Should You Request Before Treatment?
When you have a history of allergies or material sensitivities, asking questions early can help you make informed decisions. It also gives your dentist and laboratory the opportunity to discuss whether alternative materials or finishing methods are available.
Before treatment, you may want to request:
- The manufacturer and product name of the zirconia
- The dental laboratory that will make your restoration
- Confirmation of whether the crown will be glazed or hand-polished
- The laboratory certificate or material identification sheet
- Copies of your records for future reference
Can Older Restorations Be Identified?
If the dental laboratory is still in business, it may be able to provide records of the materials used. If the laboratory has closed or records are unavailable, identifying every component of an existing restoration can be difficult.
