I recently visited with another cosmetic dentist to see about fixing my ugly tetracycline stains. My teeth are so embarrassing. But, I’ve seen several cosmetic dentists and they all recommend porcelain veneers.
I will need to save for years in order to be able to afford porcelain veneers. Are there any affordable cosmetic dentists around? Or would it be okay to go to a dental school?

Frederick,
Thank you for your question. Porcelain veneers are truly the best fit to treat tetracycline-stained teeth. As you know, the type of staining is quite severe. Also, it is imperative that you see a reputable cosmetic dentist if you are looking for beautiful results. It takes a high level of skill by the cosmetic dentist and not just any dentist that says they do porcelain veneers will cut it.
Porcelain veneers are pricey, as you’ve learned. But, there is a reason for it. You shouldn’t price shop when it comes to porcelain veneers. In order to do beautiful cosmetic dentistry requires extensive training and understanding of the advanced bonding techniques and materials. If a dentist is charging less than $1,000 per tooth, it is a red flag. Tetracycline stains require the skills of a highly-skilled cosmetic dentist. If you find a more affordable cosmetic dentist, there is a reason for it. They are likely cutting corners somewhere. Or it may end up costing you more in the long run when they don’t turn out like you’d hope.
Additionally, do not go to a dental school for cosmetic dentistry. Many general dentists that have been practicing for decades, cannot get tetracycline-stained teeth right, let alone porcelain veneers on non-stained teeth.
If you are going to move forward, you won’t be happy unless it’s done right. Many cosmetic dentists will work with you on payment plans. Or maybe you save up for the treatment, or pursue financing options to get the excellent care you deserve.
Another option that may work for you is a special teeth whitening treatment called Kör whitening. Kör is a deep bleaching system. It is the only bleaching system that has proven effective on tetracycline stains. It is more affordable cosmetic dentistry treatment.
Whatever you decide to do, be sure to meet with your cosmetic dentist. Ask to see their portfolio of work on similar cases. And be sure to research their credentials. A little extra upfront work now, will ensure you protect your investment.
