I’ve started the search for a cosmetic dentist and I’m feeling overwhelmed. I started by checking out a local cosmetic dentist near me in Barrington, IL. But, he suggested x-rays. So, I did them. But, I’m not sold on his practice. So, do I need to get x-rays done as I see each potential cosmetic dentist? That seems excessive. Do you have any tips to help be find the best cosmetic dentist in my area?
I was wondering if you could tell me what is the best way to find the right dentist. If every dentist requires taking x-rays that could end up being expensive. Is there way around this?

Carol,
In the search for the right cosmetic dentist for you, the best thing to do is to start with reviews. There is a ton of information available online and on social media.
Cosmetic Dentistry Reviews
First, go to Google Maps and search for a cosmetic dentist in your area. You will be able to see patient reviews. Yelp and Facebook are other great sources to find testimonials and reviews about the practice.
Complimentary Consultation
Secondly, you asked about x-rays. You weren’t clear on what kind of cosmetic dentistry you were considering. If you are interested in services like porcelain veneers or dental bonding, you shouldn’t need an x-ray done at his stage. You can request a complimentary consultation. Also, you can request that x-rays are transferred from one dentist to another. So, you shouldn’t be required to have x-rays everywhere you go.
Most cosmetic dentistry offices will allow a complimentary visit if you request one. Be upfront and tell them you are trying to decide if their practice is the right fit. This will be an opportunity to come into the office, tour it and meet the staff. Often times, you will be able to have a quick one-on-one session with the cosmetic dentist and ask some initial questions. During this time, you can ask them about cases similar to yours, learn more about their credentials and possibly look at before and after photographs of their work.
If a dentist refuses the complimentary consultation, it’s probably not the best fit anyway. And a quick visit to the office should give you a pretty good gut feel of the atmosphere and what it will be like.
Cosmetic Dentistry Experience
Keep in mind, cosmetic dentistry is an art. So, after having done the meet and greet. It would be good to return for an initial consultation where you discuss specifics of your case, your desired goals and possible treatment options. Also, in order to do beautiful cosmetic dentistry requires extensive training beyond dental school. So, you will want to learn more about their background, experience with cases similar to yours and find out if the policies they have to ensure you love the results.
Hopefully this information is helpful as you continue on your hunt.
