I am very interested in porcelain veneers. I am in a high profile job, so a nice smile is very important. But, I don’t want to look fake. I’ve seen cases that look too glitzy. Sadly, my teeth aren’t in good shape. So, I know veneers would be worth it. I just don’t want everyone to know I’ve had dental work done. I want an improved, average-looking smile. Is that possible with porcelain veneers? Or are there other options that would work better?

Ken,
Well, you are in the minority. Most people that get a smile makeover really want a perfect smile. They want that “Hollywood” look of beautiful, bright pearly whites. But, it’s not the right look for everyone. You’ve touched on something that is very important when considering cosmetic dentistry. You need to have a look that fits your life. One that matches your personality, hair and complexion. So, dazzling white isn’t always the best way to go. And in your case, it sounds like you want an average smile that blends in.
An excellent cosmetic dentist will absolutely be able to deliver the look you are after. The shade can be made a darker and minor imperfections can be added too. The key to a successful smile makeover comes with the ability of your cosmetic dentist to listen to your goals and interpret them in a way that fits you. For example, square teeth tend to portray a more masculine look. This might show well in photos or on camera because it conveys strength. Longer teeth tend to give the patient a youthful, playful look. So, it sounds like it’s time to have a consultation with a cosmetic dentist in your area that has done similar cases. They should be able to show and demonstrate the different looks they’ve done on others, as well as show your photographs of precisely how your porcelain veneers will look on your face.
Composite bonding is another option to consider. But, porcelain veneers will be a longer-lasting look that ties in well with your existing teeth. Dental bonding does need to be replaced periodically in order to keep it looking great.
Think of your dentist like an artist. Your smile is the canvas. The right cosmetic dentist will be able to deliver a smile makeover that is indeed right for you.
Thank you for your question.
