I really want to get Lumineers because, from everything I’ve seen online, the transformations are incredible. If my smile was finally white and not so crooked, it would give me so much self-confidence and I wouldn’t have to hide my smile anymore. How do I go about finding the best Lumineers dentist in my area?

Shannon,
It is exciting that you are ready for a smile makeover. There are many options. You mention that you are looking for the best Lumineers dentist, which is actually somewhat ironic since many excellent cosmetic dentists do not like Lumineers. You may not realize it, but there are many misconceptions when it comes to Lumineers. The marketing and advertising material look fabulous. But, you need to make sure you understand and manage your expectations before moving forward.
Lumineers is a certain brand of porcelain veneers. It is heavily marketed by the company that owns them, DenMat. Many patients request them, due to the extensive marketing. Lumineers are a brand of ultra-thin veneers and do not require any tooth preparation. This is a selling point they pride themselves on. Who wouldn’t want a dazzling, white smile – right?
The fact of the matter is that ultra-thin, no preparation porcelain veneers are not for everyone. Most excellent cosmetic dentists don’t like doing Lumineers. There are many trademark restrictions when using the Lumineers brand and the veneers must be created at the DenMat laboratory. This can be somewhat restrictive to a cosmetic dentist. Often times, a Lumineers patient doesn’t love the end result because they tend to make the teeth look bulky and longer than normal. This is all attributed to the no preparation technique.
Lumineers also market dentists to offer them to their patients. This is one way a general dentist or family dentist can begin offering “cosmetic dentistry” into their practice. But, not every patient truly understands that it takes extensive training and experience in order to create beautiful porcelain veneers. Also, many expert cosmetic dentists feel that you can not achieve fabulous results without the important tooth preparation step. The preparation step ensures a seamless transition to your natural tooth and the veneer. Many believe it is the only way to create a natural-looking, lifelike smile makeover.
Therefore, it is in your best interest to find a reputable cosmetic dentist first and foremost. Try not to be set on a certain treatment plan or product. Each dentist has their strengths and weaknesses. So, you never want to tell a dentist that you want x, y or z. You want to go in with an open mind, express your desires and find a cosmetic dentist you can trust to deliver the results you are after.
When selecting the best cosmetic dentist for you, check their credentials, ask to see photographs of cases similar to yours and ask about any guarantee of their work. Many cosmetic dentists will provide a complimentary consultation where you can meet the staff, tour the office and spend a little time with the dentist.
It cannot be said enough, not every dentist can do beautiful cosmetic dentistry. So, meet with several and find one that you can trust. A good indicator of their skill and commitment to cosmetic dentistry is if they are a member or fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. So, that is always a good starting point.
Thank you for your question. It is a common one when it comes to Lumineers.
